Historic First — No Legislative Fundraisers Scheduled in April
Not since the Legislature went full-time in 1966 has there been an April without a single fund-raiser scheduled by any of California’s 120 state lawmakers.
As if.
April Fools.
And that’s pretty much what anybody is who drops $3,900 for weenies and a cocktail.
Actually, spring break makes April a relatively light fundraising month with somewhere around 30 scheduled so far, a handful of which are for statewide office holders or candidates.    Read more »

Toxic Assets
Other than a macabre sense of gallows humor, what would possibly cause the taxpayers of the United States to be eager about owning something so named? A better title might lead to a higher level of excitement about ownership.
For example, is there any doubt that more headcheese would be consumed were it instead called Cranialetti?    Read more »
Memo to the President
MEMO
To: President Barack Obama
From: Students of American History
We do not debate the efficacy of appearing on late night television after a monologue in which the Vice President is chided for being windy followed by a sporadically amusing sketch involving items purportedly bought at a 99-cent store. At least you got to come onstage before Garth Brooks.    Read more »
California Penal Code Section 422.6 (a)
A visit to Taxpayers United to Recall Jeff Miller, a freshman GOP Assemblyman, is a good illustration of how warped and reckless California’s political process has become.
Article II, Sections 13 through 19 of the state constitution discuss recall. While the sections do not define what sort of behavior by an elected official warrants recall, it seems a mechanism that should be employed only under dire circumstances: malfeasance, corruption, moral turpitude, mental incapacity.    Read more »

California’s Capitol Press Credential Request
March 2, 2009
Governor’s Press Office, State Capitol
Press Corps Credentialing Coordinator:
It is with some trepidation that we request a credential for our chief correspondent. While Mr. Lucas does write frequently about the governor and his policies, it is most commonly in an unctuous and ill-informed manner.
This has led to a bevy of reprimands in his personnel file and frequent reader complaints.    Read more »
A Few Puzzlers…
Why is it people so often say “the Ukraine” instead of simply Ukraine? Is it common to hear someone say “the Senegal,” “the India” or “the Honduras?”
It happens to Netherlands, too. And, although not a country, myriad.
An “a” in front of myriad is wildly redundant since, quoting the Free On-Line Dictionary, myriad is defined as “a large indefinite number.”    Read more »
Oh, Acting Governor…
MEMO
TO: Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi
FROM:California’s Capitol
As you know, you are the acting governor while Governor Schwarzenegger is out of the state. Out of the country, actually. He’s in Germany – the Hannover Fair Grounds today to be exact. Or so his schedule says. He will be there at least through Tuesday.    Read more »

RE: PUTTING RONALD REAGAN’S HEAD ON A STICK
Many attendees at the state GOP Convention were either not born or wearing jammies with little feet during the 1966 gubernatorial election in which Ronald Reagan defeated incumbent Democrat Pat Brown.    Read more »
