The Fundraising Season Begins to Pick Up Steam

Could be crowded January 30 at Tequila Museo Mayahuel restaurant on 12th and K in Sacramento.

Of course crowded is just how the owners like it .

And how the two state Senate candidates holding fundraisers there yearn for it to be as well.

Sen. Kevin  de Leon, a Los Angeles Democrat, wants a minimum of $1,000 to attend his 5:30 to 7:30 pm fundraiser at the restaurant.

He seeks re-election in 2014.

Jason Hodge, the husband of Assemblywoman Fiona MA, a San Francisco Decmorat, is a Democratic candidate for the coastal 19th Senate District which includes Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, Ventura and former Democratic Assemblywoman [....]

Space is Extremely Limited! This Event Will Sell Out!

According to the Secretary of State, AT&T spent $270,001.43 in  2011 hosting the 14th Annual Speaker’s Cup at Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill and The Links at Spanish Bay.

The “Ultimate” package — golf for four for two days — was $60,000.

Apparently, the economy is on the mend because the identical package is $65,000 this year.

Mark the calendar: May 4 and May 5

And don’t forget to include jacket and shirt size!

It’s This Kind of Love the Capitol Missed the Most

The lonely hiatus is finally over.

At last, the grand and glorious day has arrived – the Legislature returns to the Capitol.

It’s been an excruciatingly long four months.

The doldrums of no committee hearings, no press conferences and no windy but pointless floor speeches are finally at an end.

Finally, dull inactivity replaced with tedious overactivity.

And that deserves celebration.

Or so says the legislative Latino Caucus.

On January 4, they’re throwing a little shindig at Tequila Museo Mayahuel on Sacramento’s K St. Mall.

A “Welcome Back” reception, the invitation says.

Who exactly is welcoming back who?

As a [....]

Pull!

Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, a Hesperia Repoublican, founded the largest Minuteman chapter in California in 2005, his official biography says. He “answered the call of his country and joined the fight to secure our borders,” is how the bio puts it.

Donnelly was a strong opponent of the so-called “Dream Act,” a largely symbolic measure signed by Gov. Jerry Brown that allows illegal immigrants to apply for public financial aid at state colleges and universities.

He also likened Brown’s signing another measure — AB 144 by Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, a Pasadena Democrat — to a “form of tyranny.”

The bill makes it a [....]

Twenty Working Days Left in the Legislative Session But Plenty of Time for Fundraisers

There are 98 fundraisers scheduled for the remainder of the legislative session, which begins August 15.

That’s 98 — so far.

Critics say lawmakers are shamelessly shaking down well-heeled interest groups at a time when the fate of legislation those groups care about depend on the votes of the contribution-soliciting politicians.

Lawmakers counter that they are leaving Sacramento within a few days and won’t return for the rest of the year. Ergo, the final weeks of session offer the most convenient time to Hoover up as many large contributions as possible before blowing town.

Session ends on September 9. Dividing 98 events by [....]

From the “Geez, No Irony Here” File…

This is too rich to ignore.

Freshman Assemblyman Allan Mansoor, a Republican, is hosting a breakfast in his district at the Costa Mesa Country Club on Friday August 5 to benefit his 2012 re-election campaign.

For a contribution of $3,900, the maximum allowed under state campaign law, two people can attend eight such breakfasts over two years and any other district events Mansoor choses to throw. The $3,900 constitutes membership in Mansoor’s “Platinum Club.”

Visa, Mastercard and American Express are welcome.

A $3,900 contribution is not what the average Orange County constituent of Mansoor would be likely to give.

Examining the contributions Mansoor received in [....]
