As The Assembly Conducts Its Annual ‘Woman of the Year” Ceremony March 26…

…Its 80 members and their honorees should consider these facts from a March 5 article in The Daily Beast called “Women and the Leadership Gap:”

The United States ranks 71st in the world in female legislative representation. Bangladesh, Sudan and the United Arab Emirates score higher.

Seventeen percent of US Senators are women. Only 16.8 percent of the House of Representatives.

The Supreme Court has three women justices out of nine.

Six of the country’s 50 governors — 12 percent — are women.

In state legislatures, 23.6 percent of elected representatives are female.

Nine percent of mayors of the nations 100 largest cities are women.

To California’s credit:

Twelve of its 40 senators are women, 30 percent.

Of the 80 members of the Assembly, 22 are women — 27.5 percent.

Four of the seven members of the California Supreme Court are women, including Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye.

Women are 50.3 percent of California’s population and almost 51 percent of the nation’s population.
