Temporarily Closed Roseville DMV Office to Close Permanently — In Theory

Among the state property slated for disposal in the indefinite future is the Roseville Field Office of the Department of Motor vehicles.

It was added to the state’s “For Sale” list in 2010. The state hopes to reap $1 million from the sale.

This is the same office that was closed July 26th through August 1 after a student driver crashed into the building, creating a 4-foot by 5-foot hole.

According to the DMV – as noted in the state’s 2010 annual report on properties to be sold – the Roseville office is “undersized, functionally deficient and presents health/safety issues due to its location.”

There is a “high volume exchange of customers on an hourly basis, on an insufficiently sized site, located on a busy four-lane thoroughfare,” the report notes.

The existing 4,766-square foot, 36-year-old building sits on a 1.1-acre site at 222 Harding Blvd.

It has a “275 percent space deficiency and has become a liability to the state,” last year’s surplus property report starkly says.

Over the next five years, the DMV plans to build an 18,000 square foot facility on nearly 3.5 acres.

Unlike some other capital improvements sidelined by the state’s general fund fiscal woes, the nearly $1 billion budget of the Department of Motor Vehicles comes from car and truck registration and license fees.

That ever-growing revenue source increases the chances a new DMV office in Roseville actually will be created within five years.
