State Unemployment Climbs .1 Percent in June to 11.8 Percent

SACRAMENTO — California’s unemployment rate increased to 11.8 percent in June, and non-agriculture jobs increased by 28,800 during the month, according to data released July 22 by the California Employment Development Department from two separate surveys.

The US unemployment rate also increased in June, to 9.2 percent.

In May, the state’s unemployment rate was 11.7 percent. In June 2010, the unemployment rate was 12.4 percent. The unemployment rate is derived from a federal survey of 5,500 California households.

According to a state survey of 42,000 employers, non-agriculture jobs in California totaled 14,068,600 in June — an increase of 28,800 jobs over the month. The year-over-year change from June 2010 to June 2011 shows an increase of 156,800 jobs, up 1.1 percent.

A federal survey of households, done with a smaller sample than the state’s survey of employers, shows a decrease in the number of employed persons. It estimates the number of Californians holding jobs in June was 15,910,000, a decrease of 37,000 from May — down 13,000 from the employment total in June of last year.

The number of people unemployed in California was 2,134,000 – up by 18,000 over the month but down by 116,000 compared with June of last year.

Manufacturing, information services, financial activities, professional and business services, educational and health services and leisure and hospitality and other services were sectors of the economy that added jobs, gaining 40,900 over the month.

Professional and business services posted the largest increase, adding 16,400 jobs.

Two categories — construction and trade, transportation and utilities — reported job declines, down 12,100 jobs. Trade, transportation and utilities posted the largest decrease losing 11,000 jobs.

This from California Republican Party Chair Tom Del Beccaro:

“Unemployment numbers released today provide another month of indisputable data that show the Democrats’ anti-job policies have consistently failed to put California back to work.

“The complete disregard that (Gov.) Jerry Brown and (President) Barack Obama have shown toward job-creators in the once-Golden State has kept an unacceptable number of Californians on the sidelines for far too long.”
