  1. Greg: Great interview with Willie Lewis. I was proud that I was one of the 12 Democrats whou would have marched out on the floor with the 29 Republicans to make Willie Brown the next Speaker.

Fortunately, we picked up another 14 Democrats and Willie went on to be the greatest Speaker of all time.

There are so many myths and half truths about his Speakership. The one that always makes me chuckle is that he was an iron-fisted tyrant.

That’s laughable. Willie was a pussycat. All of us in his leadership were the blood thirsty ones. I remember once we wanted to sack a really talented, but cantankerous member.

Willie stopped us and gave the member a promotion!!! He gave us a lesson future Speakers should have heeded….”don’t leave a talented member with nothing to do otherwise they’ll spend every waking moment causing trouble.”

Willie was and is the smartest and most wonderful man I ever met in my 20 plus years of public life. To this day, I would still follow him into the abyss.

  2. This is a fantastic video high lighting the career of a very thoughtful individual called Willie Brown. While I was not close to Willie when he was speaker the few times I had discussions with him on policy matters, I always knew where he stood. He is a gentleman in every sense of the word and California is fortunate to have had him in our legislature.
