California’s Population Grows a Bit to 37.5 Million

California’s population grew less than one percent between July 1, 2010 and July 1, 2011 to total more than 37.5 million persons, according to official population estimates released today by Gov. Jerry Brown’s Department of Finance.

This represents 260,000 new residents during the fiscal year and continues the pattern of modest growth rates over the past few years. The current growth rate of 0.70 percent is a slight increase over last year’s growth of 0.65 percent.

Some Interesting Statistics About California’s Workforce

More than 16.5 million Californians over the age of 16 work, according to the US Census Bureau.

Just over 2 million Californians are unemployed, according to the 2009 American Community Survey conducted by the federal government. That translates to 11.3 percent of the workforce – a percentage point lower than the unemployment rate calculated by the state.

Of the 14.4 million women over the age of 16, a little over half — 7.5 million — are employed.

More than one-third of the 16.5 million Californians employed in the civilian workforce – nearly 6 million – have jobs in what the federal government classifies as “management, professional and related occupations.”

According to the 2000 U.S. Census, the 10 most commonly spoken languages in California, by percentage of population usage, are: 

English………………..60.5%

Spanish……………….25.8%

Chinese…………………2.6%

Tagalog…………………2.0%

Vietnamese…………….1.3%

Korean………………….0.9%

Armenian……………….0.5%

Japanese……………….0.5%

Persian………………….0.5%

German…………………0.5% 

French is 11th.

The census also found that more than 40 percent of Californians speak a language other than English at home. A subsequent study by the Davis Administration catalogued 232 languages and dialects spoken in the state.
